Course summary
Interaction design is a relatively new area of design that illuminates the relationship between people and the technology they use. The course examines the role of embedded behaviours and intelligence in physical and virtual spaces as well as the convergence of physical and digital products and services. A major part of the course is user-centered design and graphical user interface design. This course offers the chance to start thinking and experimenting within this discipline. The aim of the course is to achieve a solid grounding in the field of interaction design.
Learning outcomes
Students shall gain an understanding of, and develop skills within, the areas of interaction design. Students should understand the fundamentals of interaction design and know about different perspectives and approaches to the field. They should also understanding technical and design constraints within interactive media. Student should know the basics of computation, screen-based reaction and be able to prototype simple interaction design problems. Students will have a better understanding of visual abstraction, typography, motion, screen-based design and usability. Student should develop a richer and more reflective language about interaction design and be able to evaluate and give design critique with regard to the interactive qualities. Students will be able to design and create expressive digital user experiences.
Approach
The course is divided into two-, three- and four-week projects with deliverables. The course has a high tempo with frequent critiques. The course is ambitious and requires hard individual work. The course is based upon close contact with the teachers. There will be a mix of lectures, workshops, critiques and tutoring. Half the course is based on individual work, the rest in groups. In addition to this ‘hands-on’ approach we have regular discussions to highlight and discuss issues within the field of Interaction Design.
Modules
1. Process and perspectives
2. Aesthetic computing
3. Game Design
4. Information Architecture
5. Exhibition project
6. Service dialogues
